Professional Tax (PT) is a state-level tax levied on salaried individuals and professionals in India. It is deducted by the employer from the employee's monthly salary and remitted to the state government. The maximum annual professional tax is Rs. 2,500, as prescribed under Article 276 of the Indian Constitution.
Not all Indian states levy professional tax. This calculator currently supports verified salaried-employee PT schedules for Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Assam, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, and Tripura. Each state has its own slab structure based on monthly, annual, or half-yearly salary bands.
Simply select your state and enter your monthly gross salary to see the effective PT outcome, the annual professional tax deduction, and the full slab table used for the calculation. This helps you understand salary deductions better and plan your take-home pay accurately.
Good to know: Professional tax paid during the financial year is fully deductible under Section 16(iii) of the Income Tax Act. This deduction is available under both the Old and New tax regimes. Maharashtra has a special rule where the February deduction is Rs. 300 instead of Rs. 200 to reach the Rs. 2,500 annual cap. Odisha withdrew profession tax from 1 April 2026, but this calculator still includes the FY 2025-26 schedule that applied up to 31 March 2026.
